Pomar Junction Wine-Rail Excursion, May 5th 2017: Offered every so often through the San Luis Obispo Railroad Museum and the Central Coast Railroad Festival, this is a unique experience that takes you through SLO’s incredible wine country while stopping at various local vineyards/wineries.
After boarding the Amtrak Coast Starlight at SLO’s train station, guests are able to sit back and sip some wine while travelling through the local neighborhoods, Cal Poly campus, and through the Cuesta Grade up to Paso Robles.
Along the way, the group stops at the D’Anbino tasting room which was formerly a Paso Robles train depot. A D’Anbino, wine explorers are able to taste the family’s small-batch handcrafted wines while learning about the D’Anbino family history. Since most of the group were former musicians before launching a winery, sometimes the D’Andrea and Rubino families will get together and put on a live show.
Next the train rolls on over to Pomar Junction in Templeton to enjoy a picnic lunch under some oak trees against a backdrop of vineyards and a vintage train car kept right there on the tracks. (Note: Every Friday evening Pomar Junction invites guests to celebrate and wind down after the workweek with wine, food, and live music for Train Wreck Fridays. The cost is $15 per person or free for Parlour Club members and children 6 and younger.)
After some food and libations, guests hop back on the train to head back to SLO and going southbound, you are treated to views that you may never otherwise see. The train snakes through various tunnels, travels through the backside of Cal Poly, crosses over the Stenner Creek Bridge, and even peeks out over the California Men’s Colony while you sit back in the observation car and take it all in.
