The story begins with founder Stephen Ross Dooley making apple and rhubarb wines in his parents Minnesota basement.
As he got older, Stephen’s curiosity of homemade wine-making led to him pursuing an education in enology from UC Davis. Over the next 10 years, he experimented in making wines in Napa Valley and spent 7 years in Edna Valley before launching his own brand, Stephen Ross and then a second brand called Flying Cloud. Planting its own Corral Vineyard in conjunction with two other wineries to yield Pinot Noir fruits, Stephen and his wife decided to create Flying Cloud to break away from its main varietal and produce other vinos of a wider selection and great value. Located off of 178 Suburban Road in SLO, Stephen Ross Wine Cellars is open Thurs-Sun 11am-5pm and offers a $10 tasting fee.
